Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei passed away on Thursday morning after succumbing to her burn injuries.
Cheptegei died at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret while undergoing treatment.
MTRH acting Director Dr Owen Menach said the athlete organs failed.
The 33 year old athlete sustained over 80 per cent body burn after being set on fire by her Kenyan boyfriend Dickson Ndiema.
Reliable sources claim Dickson Ndiema timed after Cheptegei came from church, doused her in petrol and set her ablaze.
Cheptegei’s father revealed that the two lovers had a disagreement over a piece of land belonging to Cheptegei.
Sports PS Peter Tum had directed the Ugandan athlete to be airlifted from MTRH Eldoret to Nairobi for more specialized care.
Cheptegei leaves behind two children.
